Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
